Bit of Motherly Advice

Some of you have already heard this advice, but it never hurts to hear something twice.  To the pregnant ladies, new moms, moms in general, or adults with sleeping problems, this will change your life!

Let me tell you a little back story.  When Baby Girl was 8 weeks old, I was in a panic.  She was the worst sleeper and I was starting to lose my mind!  She was an easy baby, but she wouldn't stay asleep for more than 45 minutes.  Ugh.  I did a little research and decided to read a highly recommended book called Healthy Sleeping Habits, Happy Child.  It turns out that she's a great sleeper (and still is) and I was the one who was messing it up.  I've read a ton of baby books including Baby Wise and Happiest Baby On The Block.  While those were very helpful and I'm glad I read them, if you only read one book, make it this one.  Even if you have older children, this book is extremely helpful.  It teaches you the science of sleep from birth through adulthood.

Some of the most valuable things I learned include:
  • Newborns should never be awake for more than 2 hours.
  • Everyone has sleep cycles.  These are periods of deep sleep and awake sleep.  A baby can have his/her eyes open, move, make noises, and appear to be awake when they're actually sleeping.  The first wake cycle occurs after 45 min - 1 hr.  I was rushing in and getting Baby Girl out of the crib at this point because I thought she was awake and read to get up.  After reading the book, I allowed her to get through the sleep cycle, put herself back into deep sleep, and she started taking 3 hour naps.  Hallelujah!!!
  • Sleep begets sleep.
  • If your baby loses too much sleep and becomes overtired, he/she will have a hard time falling asleep and may appear hyper and aggressive.
Happy Reading!!!
