An Upper King Street Feast

When you live in an amazing city like Charleston, it's always a good idea to play tourist in your own town.

There are so many amazing places to visit and things to do.

Some of my favorites are carriage tours through historic downtown, ghost tours (because the city is haunted, of course), and visiting the many plantations.

I feel extremely lucky and incredibly spoiled to live here due to our restaurant situation.  We have the best food in the world.  Did you know that the Upper King Street area was named one of the top 10 food neighborhoods in America?! There are unbelievably delicious new restaurants popping up on a weekly basis.  The only problem is that there are so many to choose from and it's hard to know which restaurant to pick and which menu items to order.  It's a real dilemma.

That's where Charleston Culinary Tours comes in.  Mr. BMJ and I had the opportunity to take the Upper King Street tour this weekend and we loved the experience.  It's the perfect way for visitors and locals to experience several of Charleston's tastiest restaurants and to learn more about the history of the city and the local cuisine.  Our guide, Charlie, was extremely informative and friendly and led us through an enjoyable 2.5 hours of eating, learning, and meeting new people.

We had 3 dishes at each of the restaurants:  HOM, Prohibition, and Rue de Jean, and gelato at Paolo's Gelato Italiano.  I was so stuffed and loved everything we ate.  My favorite was probably at the end of the tour with the best mussels in town at Rue de Jean with pommes frites (fancy French fries) dipped in the sauce!  Though, I did inhale the mac and cheese at Prohibition.  And the turkey burgers at HOM were perfection....

Charleston Culinary Tours also offers several other tours including the Chef's Showcase at the Farmer's Market.  You meet a guide and the day's participating chef at the farmer's market where you select fresh ingredients to be prepared farm to table style for your group after a walking tour of the area.  I can hardly wait until Spring so we can try it out!

*The tour was complimentary but, as always, all opinions are my own!

p.s.  Why do I drink Baby Mama Juice?  Because we finished the first season of Showtime's "The Affair" last night.  We, of course, binge watched the heck out of it.  It's a very intense drama and I can't wait for the second season to start in the Fall to see how it all turns out.

  7. The highlight and biggest priority whenever we travel is food (#noshame), so I have decided that we are DEFINITELY doing one of these tours on our next Charleston visit!
